Our mystery film soundtrack turns out to be a not so uncommon format for 16mm but somewhat rare in 35mm. It's a Maurer or Tobis-Klang Film soundtrack. Its use dates back to about 1930. The number of narrow Variable Area tracks could vary somewhat. Sound recording "cameras" could lay down either the Maurer or a Variable Density soundtrack with a shift in the optics.
