The period between 1952 and approximately 1975 saw many attempts to recreate the visceral effect of Cinerama, generally in a simpler or cheaper way. Some of these short lived systems were developed by cinema and optical professionals and others were cobbled together by people that were little more than avid amateurs. Others involved substantial research and development along with large promotional budgets, but the market was only so big and every new idea didn't gain wide acceptance. Lack of funds killed most of the Mayflies. Dumb ideas killed a good many.
