Subject: APERTURES, PRIME LENSES, ANAMORPHIC LENSES.

The aperture size required for the projection of Michael Todd's "AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS" is .675" by .912". This will have to be modified in each individual case due to varying screen curvatures and the fact that prime lenses required come in steps of 1/4" focal lengths.

Apertures will in most Cases have to be filed to fit each particular case.

The Anamorphic lenses required can be any of the approved variable prismatic type such as:

Panavision Super Panatar
HiLux VAL
Panavision Ultra Panatar (longer focal lengths only)
Gaumont-Kalee Varamorph

All of these lenses are capable of being adjusted to the required 1.567 ratio or squeeze and in many cases are already in possession of the theatre. These lenses of course can be used for the projection of CinemaScope and Superscope as well by changing the anamorphic ratio.

In cases where the required focal length of the lens is less than 3", it is suggested that special custom built lenses be procured from Panavision, Inc. These custom lenses include both prime and anamorphic in one complete unit.

Note 1 - In filing apertures to correct for keystone care must be exercised not to file much beyond .912 as there is danger of showing the magnetic striping on screen. It is best to start with an undersized aperture and file to .912 max.

Note 2 - The setting of the variable anamorphic lens can be accomplished as follows:

Method #1

Project aperture on screen with prime or back-up lens only. Center on screen, measure width accurately, then install variable anamorphic and spread to above measured width times 1.567 and lock at this point.

Method #2

Project .715 x .912 aperture on screen, using prime or back-up lens plus variable anamorph. Measure height on screen, spread variable anamorph to a width exactly twice the height and lock at this point.
